The Brainerd Warrior dance team lost a tie-breaker to St. Cloud Tech for top honors in the kick competition Saturday at a dance invitational in Wayzata.
The effort comes after a disappointing meet last week in Sauk Rapids in which Brainerd took fourth place with a new kick routine.
Head Coach Cindy Clough said the team worked extra hard after the area meet, so finishing second Saturday meant a lot.
"We knew we had a great routine, we just had to execute it," Clough said. "We were so unclean in the meet in Sauk Rapids and the judges couldn't see through it. This past week we put it together."
Clough said many of the dance teams in Wayzata are in Brainerd's section, so they were able to get a good look at some of the teams they'll be up against in the state qualifying meet Feb. 3.
"We got by all the teams in our section but Tech, so it looks good," Clough said. "Our section is becoming one of the top sections in the state."
Results of the kick competition: St. Cloud Tech, first, 4 points; Brainerd, second, 4.5; Elk River, third, 8; Wayzata, fourth, 13; Eden Prairie, fifth, 15; Mounds View, sixth, 17; Blaine, seventh, 20; Bloomington Kennedy, eighth, 22.5; Henry Sibley, ninth, 27.5; Minnetonka, 10th, 30; Anoka, 11th, 33.5; Rochester Mayo, 12th, 34; Hopkins, 13th, 40.5; Coon Rapids, 14th, 42; Forest Lake, 15th, 43; Bloomington Jefferson, 16th, 49; and Minneapolis South, 17th, 50.
Brainerd took eighth in the jazz competition.
"We beat everyone in our section but Blaine, so we're encouraged about that," Clough said. "We didn't go to state in jazz last year, so we're hoping to qualify this year. The top three teams go to state, so if Blaine and Tech qualify, I'm hoping for the third spot."
Clough said the team put its jazz routine on the back burner this past week so it could clean up its kick routine. This week she plans to work on both routines.
Results of the jazz competition: Wayzata, first, 3 points; Eastview, second, 7; Mounds View, third, 8; Blaine, fourth, 12; Minnetonka, fifth, 17.5; Hopkins, sixth, 18; Burnsville, seventh, 22; Brainerd, eighth, 25; St. Cloud Tech, ninth, 25.5; Elk River, 10th, 28.5; Anoka, 11th, 34; Coon Rapids, 12th, 38; Minneapolis Southwest, 13th, 40; Rochester Mayo, 14th, 42; Henry Sibley, 15th, 43; Forest Lake, 16th, 48; Minneapolis South, 17th, 52; and Bloomington Jefferson, 18th, 53.
Brainerd competes Saturday in Alexandria in the Central Lakes Conference meet. The doors open at 10:15 a.m., with the kick competition beginning at 11:15 a.m. and jazz at 1 p.m.
Brainerd has won the CLC title all but one year since 1998, tying with Tech last year.
