HACKENSACK - Four people were injured - one seriously - about 7 p.m. Sunday after their car went off Cass County Road 6 and collided with trees about three miles west of Highway 371 near Hackensack, the Cass County Sheriff's Department reported.
The driver, Julie Crandall, 45, was driving westbound on County Road 6 at Island Lake Drive Northwest when she said she hit an icy patch, left the roadway and struck trees, the State Patrol reported.
One passenger, Janet Nodes, 19, Akeley, was ejected from the car and pinned to the ground by the vehicle. She was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital in Park Rapids and then airlifted to a MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, N.D. A hospital spokeswoman said Nodes was in satisfactory condition and would be discharged Monday.
Julie Crandall and two other passengers, Cortney Crandall, 18, and Truman Crandall, 11, all of Nevis, were treated at St. Joseph's Hospital in Park Rapids and released.
Rural electric co-op gets loan to upgrade
A $12.6 million federal loan will help keep electric rates lower for customers in north-central Minnesota.
Rep. Jim Oberstar, D-Minn., announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture will make the loan to the Lake Region Electric Cooperative, which serves Wadena, Becker, Clay, Douglas, Grant, Otter Tail and Todd counties.
The electric cooperative plans to use the money to upgrade its generating capacity and improve many of its substations so it can meet increased demand. The cooperative has 22,000 customers and is adding about 500 new customers each year.
YMCA Teen Scene to feature dance contest
The Brainerd Family YMCA will conduct a Teen Scene from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday for youth in fifth and sixth grades.
The activity will include music, dodgeball, concession items, pizza and a dance contest with prizes.
