20 years ago (1990)

(Photo) Juliette McCoy of Little Falls was crowned the new Miss Brainerd Lakes for 1990 at Tornstrom Auditorium by 1989 queen Yen Chu. Lisa Passe was named first runner-up and Jessica Kramer was the second runner-up.

30 years ago (1980)

The number of pickets who may walk entrance to strike-bound Larco Manufacturing was the key issue in a three-hour court hearing before Judge Clint Wyant. Violence at the plant 10 days ago resulted in a restraining order from Judge John Spellacy.

40 years ago (1970)

Durkee Manufacturing Co. of Pine River is in the process of completing a $100,000 expansion program to increase its capacity to make wooden reels and spools for the wire and cable industry. With a payroll of 120, it is Pine River's largest employer.

60 years ago (1950)

Mary Helen Showell, newly crowned Miss Brainerd, scored again when she was named winner of the regional queen contest at Crosby in the C-I school auditorium. She was escorted by her Brainerd sponsor, Bill Van Essen, of Van's Caf.

80 years ago (1930)

A telegram from Admiral Richard Byrd in Antarctica congratulated Thomas Blackburn on his fifty years of service to the N.P. Railroad. Blackburn's son, Quinn, is with the polar expedition but was away from camp, so the Admiral sent the message.

100 years ago (1910)

The chorus girls of The Merry Widow production, currently in Brainerd, must be unusually attractive. An Iowa man was so smitten he followed the troupe to several towns, running out of money and then forging a check in Duluth. He was arrested.
