I was out of town this weekend, only to come back to hear that something so incredibly cruel has happened on the lake where I live. To leave such innocence to freeze to death on the ice is just beyond cruel and I hope the investigation does not drop easily.
Unable to read
The major problem with all of our comments to the newspaper is that the person and/or persons that would do this inhumane treatment of the dogs is undoubtedly unable to read the newspaper and see what we all think of him or her. Because if they could read and write, they would have known what they were doing was very wrong. They definitely should be punished for what they have done.
It makes a person wonder what planet the commissioner is from when she first votes herself a pay increase and then makes jokes as employees and services are being cut. Too bad there is not a way to remove her from her elected position.
We, one and all, need to embrace morality. I was sad to read the front page of the Dispatch last week when it reported the abandonment of pups on the cold ice of South Long Lake. A horrific end even before they opened their eyes to see the wonders of their new world. How can one live with oneself after such an immoral act? Deal responsibly with things that we can't control and control the things that we can. I really hope that the responsible person is found and punished. Certainly I am not alone in my disgust.
In their Jan. 20 meeting, county commissioners met to discuss the budget and recommended which people to cut. No mention was made to rescinding their pay hikes. How irresponsible to pad their own pockets while taking food from the mouths of others. Not only will we remember Ms. Nystrom and Ms. Franzen at the next election, we'll also remember the other commissioners who, by their silence, went along with it. The same day President Obama said, "Those who manage the public's dollars will be held accountable - to spend wisely, reform bad habits and do business in the light of day..."
A total of $150,000 to remodel the old courtroom - is someone nuts? After $60 million in new buildings when does the waste stop? ($90 million when paid off). Go meet at the Elks.
Thanks, tow truck drivers
A big thank you to the tow truck drivers of Brainerd for their good job they do in the frigid weather. Please give them room to get around in traffic.
Wants to leave Baxter
What is going on in Baxter? Now we have a community development director? Baxter has been overreaching for quite a few years. Have you tried to make improvements on your home or build a new one? The fees and permits are enormous. The council thinks we need a new city government center as well as a senior center but with all the expensive infrastructure on the road to nowhere, where's the money going to come from? Taxes, permits and fees are increasing to the point where many want to leave Baxter including us but homes aren't selling either.
