HASTINGS -- The Brainerd Warriors girls' alpine skiing team fought off the frigid 24-degrees below zero weather and finished fourth out of 42 teams at the Welch Village Invitational Friday.
It was the largest high school race in the country with 42 teams and more than 500 racers.
"We needed and had a strong team effort," said Warriors head coach Jim Ruttger. "In a way this is a bigger meet than state. Many of the teams we faced will be eliminated come the state meet."
The Warrior boys' team did not finish in the top five. Kyle Goochey and Adam Miller were the only Warriors not to fall.
"I predict Kyle will be ranked in the top 20 somewhere; he really raced well for us," said Ruttger.
The Warriors' next meet is Thursday at Giants Ridge in Biwabik for the Grand Rapids Invitational.
