Merle Edward Olander, age 82, of Perry Lake Township, died peacefully on Jan. 19, 2010, at the Cuyuna Regional Medical Center, Transitional Care Unit in Crosby with his family by his side. He was born to Ole and Elda (Foote) Olander on Jan. 5, 1928. He was born and raised in Crosby. Merle served in the U.S. Army prior to meeting Audrey J. Herrick. They were married on July 26, 1947. Merle worked as a miner, logger, drivers license examiner and numerous other trades. He was a Teamster until he retired at the age of 65. He retired from trucking at the age of 75. He served as a town board member for many years following in his grandfather and uncles footsteps. Combined they served on the Perry Lake Township board for 100 years. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing with grandson, Zack, family and working.
He is survived by his wife, Audrey; three sons, Larry (Debra) Olander, of Crosby, Kevin Olander, of La Habra Heights, Calif., Chris (Karen) Olander, of Crosby; one daughter, Lynda (Clint) Converse, of Browerville; two brothers, Frank (Colleen) Olander, of Crosby, Gary (Wendy) Olander, of Crosby; three sisters, Janice (Ray) Moritz, of Emily, Mary (Emmet) Mays, of Puposky, and Jennifer (Don) Bock, of Puposky; 15 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Phyllis LaBorde Gustafson; a brother, Dennis Chris Olander; and infant sister, Jeanette; and daughter, Sandra Lee Olander.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 23 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Crosby. Burial will be at the Mission Township Cemetery. Friends may call on Saturday one hour prior to the services at the church. Arrangements are with the Koop Funeral Home in Crosby.
