Depth and three individual victories helped the Brainerd Warriors capture their fourth straight Section 8-2A True Team swimming and diving championship Saturday at Elk River High School.
Brainerd amassed 1,309 points to easily eclipse runner-up Alexandria by 237 points.
In the True Team format every participant's place scores points for his school in relays or individual events.
"It's great in the fact we can get that many kids involved in that type of meet," Warriors coach John Zemke said. "That was the purpose of the coaches association starting it up in the first place. We can swim A-B-C-D relays and even the D relay counts and is as important as anything else.
"We approached the meet like any other. We talked about that every point does count. This particular format benefits our team because we have so much depth."
The Warriors' 200 medley relay of Michael Brekken, Jared Anderson, Michael Ruen and Evan Reese paced its event with a time of 1:43.91.
"They haven't been as fast as they were at the beginning of the season," Zemke said, "but they've been consistently in the 1:43 range. To get all four to click at the same time is tough before the end of the year."
Goll won the 200 free with a time of 1:55.59 and Anderson won the breaststroke at 1:01.49.
Zemke said the notable efforts included Jon Warling's time of 1:01.77 in the butterfly, a second and a half faster than he's been this season. And, in the 500 free, Brady Watson dropped 12 seconds.
Additional top three finishers included Anderson, who was runner-up in the 200 individual medley, Evan Reese was third in the 50 free, Britton Murrey was third in diving, Ruen was second in the butterfly, Goll was third in the 500 free and Brekken was second in the backstroke.
The Warriors recorded 10 season-best times. No Brainerd relay or individual finished lower than 13th.
"Overall, it was not a real impressive day for us," Zemke said. "Ten season-best times, we usually have more than that during dual meets, but we did well.
"We have to keep things going. We have a couple big meets this week."
