LITTLE FALLS -- Mary "Kathern" Nelson, 83, Little Falls, formerly of Randall, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at the Lutheran Care Center of Little Falls.
She was born Aug. 25, 1916, in Davidson County, S.D., to James and Anna (Lockhart) Smith. She was adopted and raised by Olaf and Anna Grostad in 1927. She attended school in Kimball, S.D. After high school, she attended Southern State Teachers College. She taught school in South Dakota. She married W.P. "Bill" Nelson on April 16, 1938, in Brule County, S.D. In 1971, she returned to college in Springfield, S.D., to complete her bachelor of arts degree in elementary education. She taught at Dr. S.G. Knight Elementary School in Randall until she retired in 1979.
Survivors include a son, James Nelson, Leesburg, Fla.; two daughters, Kathie Headley, Cushing, and Lynn Fabro, Little Falls; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Randall Presbyterian church of Randall with the Rev. Hal Spann officiating. Burial will be in Randall City Cemetery.
Friends may call at Shelley Funeral Chapel of Little Falls from 5-8 p.m. Sunday and at the church an hour before services Monday.
