ALEXANDRIA - Leading up to this season many predicted the Brainerd Warriors boys' swimming and diving team would be good.
Saturday, the Warriors won nine of 12 events and dominated the Section 8-2A True Team field for their fifth-straight championship.
Brainerd set four True Team section records and swept the top four spots in the 100-yard butterfly and 100 freestyle.
"Because we missed out on the University of Minnesota meet we haven't had an opportunity to have our full lineup together in this type of a meet," said Warrior head coach John Zemke. "Some of our guys swam real well. Others swam about the same as they have been. We haven't had too many meets were we've been able to swim in this type of atmosphere."
Senior Jared Anderson won two individual events and helped two relays to victories. He won the 200 individual medley in 2:07.24 and the 100 backstroke in a section record time of 1:01.07.
Anderson was part of the record-setting 200 medley relay with Trevor Howard, Brian Kolbeck and Jon Warling and the record-setting 200 freestyle relay with Jake Larson, Alek Rudstrom and Andrew Goll.
Michael Ruen led the Warrior sweep in the butterfly with his winning time of 57.72 and Larson led the 100 free sweep with his winning time of 50.76.
Evan Reese captured the 50 free with a 23.15. Michael Brekken won the 100 backstroke in 59.38 and the 400 free relay of Reese, Rudstrom, Goll and Larson set the section record with a 3:22.36.
The Warriors were the only team to have four divers reach the finals. They were led by Britton Murrey's third-place 352.30. Keenan Goodrich was fifth with a 310.50.
"That definitely helped," said Zemke. "They finished all the diving before the swimming started so we went into the swimming portion with a 25-point lead. That was a big plus.
Senior Trevor Howard and junior Jon Warling each swam four season best times in their events and freshmen Sam Dellacecca and Tyler Schneider both had two top-eight finishes.
"Trevor and Jon both had great races," said Zemke. "Trevor being a senior has really come around and is swimming much faster. Jon has stepped into his role. His times have dropped a lot.
"The two freshmen had great days. They have really come along. It's pretty impressive for freshmen to swim like they did in this type of meet. Yes, we have a lot of seniors, but we have some pretty good underclassmen, too."
