Fishing
Minnesota Fishing Report
By Outdoor News
BEMIDJI AREA
Lake Plantagenet is producing perch and walleyes in 12 to 18 feet of water. Look to Lake Bemidji with glow jigs and minnows for walleyes in 18 to 20 feet during the evening hours. Panfish action continues to be decent with suspended fish being taken over 18 to 35 feet on lakes such as Rabideau, Grant and Pimushe.
BRAINERD/NISSWA AREA
Colored plain hooks and shiners or jigging spoons and minnow heads are producing walleyes in 15 to 28 feet of water on Gull Lake and Round Lake. The south end of Gull has produced numbers of northern pike in eight to 20 feet. A rosy red minnow and glow jig is a safe bet for crappies in 16 to 28 feet on lakes such as North Long, Gull and Roy. Sunfish are an easy catch in less than 12 feet on lakes such as Nisswa, Hubert and Gull.
CASS LAKE AREA
Cass Lake is producing walleyes during the day in 20 to 25 feet. Pike Bay Lake has the best evening bite in 15 to 20 feet. Perch are hitting fathead minnows in 10 to 12 feet off Stony Point on Cass and the flats of Pike Bay. The north arm of Kitchi Lake and Grace Lake are producing crappies in 25 to 35 feet. Look for northern pike in the same areas holding perch.
CROSBY AREA
Walleyes have been active in 12 to 36 feet of water on lakes such as Pelican, Serpent, and the Whitefish Chain. Downsizing your baits has been key with crappie-styled presentations producing the most fish on deep weedlines next to shallow flats. Northern pike remain active on most lakes and the area panfish bite continues to improve. Lakes such as Little Mahnomen, Big Mahnomen, Little Black Hoof, Perry, Upper Dean and Adney all have produced fish.
HACKENSACK AREA
Northern pike continue to be taken in the shallows of most lakes. Spearers and anglers both have done well. Birch Lake and Pleasant Lake are producing sunfish in nine to 12 feet and some evening walleye action in 17 to 20 feet of water. Crappie action is slow.
LAKE MILLE LACS
EAST - The best walleye reports are coming from deep water, 30 to 34 feet. The Four and Five Mile gravel, Blue Jug Flat, the Boot and Sliver all have produced fish. Jigging spoons are best during the day, while setlines and shiner minnows are the way to go at sunset. Perch have been hit and miss although the bigger fish are coming off the mud flats in between walleye bites. Ice conditions are great with 17 inches being the norm. Listen to resort and bait shop owners and you'll be fine!
WEST - Look for walleyes in 22 to 24 feet of water during lowlight periods and in 30 to 33 feet during the day. Jigging spoons or setlines and shiner minnows have produced best on the Eight Mile Flat, Sherman's Flat and Curley's Flat. Limits of perch have been an exception, but those caught have been good-sized. Vehicle traffic to the mud flats is now an option just stay on the plowed roads.
LAKE WINNIBIGOSHISH
Anglers are sorting through numbers of small perch to catch their "keepers" in 28 to 32 feet of water. Horseshoe Bar, Moses Bar, Center Bar and the north end humps have been best. Walleye reports have been minimal and the best pike action is taking place with setlines and minnows in 24 to 30 feet.
LEECH LAKE AREA
The deep humps of Walker Bay are providing steady walleye action during the day. As the sun sets, slide into 12 feet of water off Sand Point for walleyes. Miller's Bay and Shingobee Bay are kicking out panfish in 12 to 14 feet. Work Pine Point and the Narrows for perch throughout the day in nine to 13 feet of water.
RAINY LAKE
Walleyes are being caught during lowlight periods of the day in 32 feet of water. Look to Birch Point and the McIntyre Island area for the best numbers of fish. The Rainy Lake City area also has produced walleyes in shallower water, as has the Rainy River in 10 to 12 feet of water. Pike and crappie action is limited, but the trout bite has been strong on the smaller lakes just north of this area.
RED LAKE
The best walleye reports are coming from six to eight feet with a few fish coming from 13 feet of water. Red glow jigs are triggering crappies on the north end out from Hillman's and Westwind in 13 feet. Some crappies also have been caught in 13 feet along the south end ridges.
