WALKER -- Volunteer drivers drove Cass County residents 137,051 miles, largely to medical services, in 1999.

The Cass County Council on Aging manages this program.

The county paid drivers $42,162.74 in mileage to provide that service on 2,256 trips averaging 188 miles each.

Eighty-six volunteers contributed 6,095.5 hours of service for 680 riders.

Riders made $4,970 in donations toward the program, enabling the senior transportation program to end the year $5,837.26 under the $48,000 county budget.

The largest number of riders came from Walker area, followed by Cass Lake-Bena and Longville areas, then Pine River, Hackensack, Pillager/Leader, Remer/Outing and Backus.

In another transportation program Cass offers, Motley American Legion Post 124 became the first to respond to a county request this year for veterans organizations to help the county pay for the increasing number of veterans using the vets transportation program to medical services.

That post donated $1,000.
