Brainerd boys edge Tech in double-overtime

ST. CLOUD -- The Brainerd Warriors handed St. Cloud Tech its first Central Lakes Conference boys' basketball loss of the season, beating the Tigers 76-75 in double overtime Thursday.

"It was a real good win for us," Warriors coach Matt Urbanek said. "We've been in a lot of close games with good teams."

Jake Phillips scored a team-high 21 points while dishing seven assists for Brainerd. Mike Zauhar, Bryce Cloutier, Paul Tuchscherer and Jorgen Hartje also scored in double digits for the Warriors.

Zauhar and Cloutier added seven rebounds apiece.

"We had a chance to win at the end of regulation but missed the shot and regrouped," Urbanek said.

In the first overtime the same thing happened to the Warriors. Once again, Urbanek said, "We held for the last shot, missed, and had to regroup again."

Things went Brainerd's way in the second overtime. Derek Levno hit two free throws with less than 20 seconds left to put the Warriors up by three. St. Cloud knocked in a long jumper at the buzzer but fortunately for the Warriors the player's sneaker was on the three-point line.

Our guards, Levno, Phillips, and Tuchscherer, played real well defensively," Urbanek said. "They really stepped up."
