It seems a travesty and an outright abomination that President-elect Obama has chosen a gay pastor to deliver the presidential inaugural prayer. This is the unforgivable sin as stated in the Bible; if you don not believe it, read the Bible Roman's 1:26 and 27.
What a way to begin his presidency, by thumbing his nose at God our Lord and King.
Brainerd deserves honesty
The Dispatch reported on Jan. 7, 2009: The council voted to adjust the minutes stating the council approved the budget as it was intended but there was a clerical error in the numbers before the council.
The Dec. 15, 2008, city council minutes will reflect Alderwoman Fisher's motion adjusting the minutes. I understand Ms. Fisher has a mathematical background and has taught math classes. I wonder...when adding mistakes were made by her students, similar to the mistake made by city staff in adding 12 figures in the revenue column on the 2009 budget recap sheet, did she ever refer to her students' mistakes as clerical errors?
Taxpayers pay for staff salaries/wages/benefits - an amount that is 50-60 percent of a $13 million budget. Tax dollars pay as much for expected quality performance from staff as do they pay for snowplows and sewers. Would council members approve the purchase of inferior street equipment and excuse such a purchase by saying, we got it at a bargain price? Probably not.
So why sugarcoat a simple math error by calling it a clerical error?
The council has as much responsibility to the Brainerd taxpayers to ensure they receive quality performance from city staff, as they do to ensure they receive quality street construction and equipment.
Neglecting to include one figure out of 12 in a math calculation isn't a clerical error - it's carelessness.
Administrator Vogt indicated city staff realized their error after Alderman Bob Olson identified it during the meeting. Mr. Vogt concluded, Perhaps the correct method would've been to take care of it that night. Yes, acknowledging and correcting the error that night would have allowed the council and the public to have accurate totals.
Brainerd Citizens don't need or want sugarcoating. Brainerd citizens deserve honesty and forthrightness.
Founded by Christians
Thomas Jefferson said, If a nation expects to be ignorant and free ... it expects what never was and never will be. A quote from one of this nations founding fathers is just as much true then as it is today. Obama and the democrats are succeeding in selling a vision of America that has little to do with the vision of its founding because so many Americans are now detached from and uninformed of the documents that defined the country -- the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bible.
As a people, are we not tired of revisionists trying to rewrite history and stating facts that are not in it. This nation was not founded by a bunch of lawless, uneducated, atheistsor deists as some would try to have you believe. America was founded by Christians on the principles of Christ and His teachings.
Patrick Henry said, It cannot be emphasized too clearly and too often that this nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religion, but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ. For this very reason, peoples of other faiths have been afforded asylum, prosperity, and freedom of worship here.
Back in the days of this nation's founding, Christianity was not just something someone did on Sunday or behind closed doors; it was a part of everyday life. The Bible, prayer, and worship were a part of everythingthe American Revolution, the Constitutional Convention, the Declaration of Independence, Presidential inaugurationseven the start of Congress. It sorrows me to see not only area writers, but the media in general fall into this trap of a doctrine that does not exist.the separation of church and state. In fact, revisionists are trying to separate not just the government from its Christian heritage, but America as a whole.

These are human beings too
Thirteen Israelis have been killed, three of whom are civilians, as opposed to over 1,000 Palestinians killed, most of which are civilians, many of whom are children. This is not self-defense this is an orgy of reprisal and terror on an occupied people who have the audacity not to be totally on their knees to their occupiers of over 40 years. This is too much like the Germans in World War II wiping out whole villages in occupied territories if one of theirs was hurt.
There is nothing religious about this. There is no God that any civilized people would ever worship who would condone such bloodlust. And this administration, as its final act, keeps the United Nations at bay and gives Israel a free hand to use the billions that we have given them for years to destroy an occupied people. These are atrocities. This is too close to genocide.
How long would we, as Americans, be willing to be occupied by an unsympathetic power before we fought back in any way we could just to let them know we are still a proud people.
Yes, the Jews in Europe suffered atrocities throughout their history, but we thought their religion would make them sensitive to the pain of others. Those in power seem only to have learned the lesson of many abuse victims, how to be abusers themselves.
There is no country in the world that could get away with this except Israel and that is only because this administration provides the protective cover for them. We, with the rest of the world, must rise with righteous indignation and demand a stop to this orgy of violence taken out on people who are already captives.
