MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Target Corp. officials got a nice post-Holiday return on their investment in a re-recorded song by India.Arie and Stevie Wonder.
The specially commissioned version of "Christmas Song" was nominated last week for a Grammy Award for best collaboration with vocals. It appeared in Target commercials during the holidays and has been sold only through the store.
Store officials, who weren't aware that the song had been submitted for consideration, were dumfounded when they heard the news, according to Target spokesman Douglas Kline.
Three of the holiday commercials combined the vocals with images, while the fourth featured the two singers performing, Kline said.
Kline said Target brought India.Arie and Wonder together for the song. The commercials were shot in New York City in July.
A spokesman for India.Arie's label confirmed that Motown Records had submitted the song, which appears as a bonus track only on special versions of India.Arie's "Voyage to India" CD available at Target or through the stores' Web site.
The song "is certainly eligible," said Barb Dehgan of the Grammy Awards' communications office, because it was released commercially. Although the Grammy office has no official records on the subject, staff members could not recall a similar situation in which a nominated song arrangement had been made specifically for a commercial, she said.
The song is competing in the collaboration category with works by Christina Aguilera and Redman ("Dirrty"), Tony Bennett and k.d. lang ("What a Wonderful World,"), Natalie Cole and Diana Krall ("Better Than Anything"), Sheryl Crow and Don Henley ("It's So Easy") and Santana and Michelle Branch ("The Game of Love").
