Raider men outrebounded

VIRGINIA -- The Central Lakes College Raiders men's basketball team knew it had to keep Mesabi's standout center Angelo Griffin off the glass in order to have a chance to come away with a win.

But Griffin had other plans as he scored a game-high 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Norsemen to a 87-83 win over CLC Thursday.

"We just couldn't stop (Griffin)," Raiders coach Jim Russell said. "They beat us on the boards and the free throw line. This was a good battle on the road for us in a tough environment."

Deejay Mayfield led CLC with 22 points, including four 3-pointers, and seven assists. Tony Monson added 18 points and five rebounds. Ben Neuhaus chipped in with 14 points and Bobby Burton 10 to guide the Raiders to their best offensive output of the season.

Both teams shot well from the field. CLC shot 44.4 percent while Mesabi was at a blistering 48.4 percent.

But the story of the game was the 42-33 edge Mesabi held in rebounding and their 19-23 shooting from the free-throw line.
