AARP tax preparation schedule

Posted: Friday, January 15, 2010

AARP volunteer tax aides will be preparing income tax forms, rent credit and property tax refund forms for low- to middle-income people with special emphasis for those age 60 and older.

This is a free service for those eligible. Taxpayers need to bring the following information: 1099SSA (if you do not receive one, go to the Social Security office for a printout), Railroad Retirement Statements, W-2, 1099 R, 1099 INT, 1099 DIV, 1099B (if you sold stock have the cost basis for the stock sold), property tax statement and donations to charity.

This year, the sales tax on a 2009 vehicle can be added to your standard deduction, same as your property taxes were last year and again this year. If a new vehicle was purchased in 2009, bring the purchase agreement. New this year is a $25 lower income Motor Fuel Credit refundable credit for married couples under $33,220 and single taxpayers with less than $22,730. There's no need to own a car or have a driver's license to qualify for this credit. Those who haven't filed for property tax refunds in the past can still file for a 2008 Property Tax Refund by bringing 2008 income tax records and the 2009 Property Tax Statement. To file for the 2009 Property Tax Refund, the 2010 Property Tax statements are needed (available in March) and the 2009 income information to e-file the 2009 Property Tax refund form.
