20 years ago (1990)

Seven candidates will compete for $2,800 in scholarship prizes in the 1990 Miss Brainerd lakes Scholarship Pageant. This year's contestants are: Lisa Passe, Brenda Fredstrom, Juliette McCoy, Stacy Helland, Jessica Kramer, Allison Hargrave and Norie Chandler.

30 years ago (1980)

"Hey, man, he's got an axe," a Larco striker shouted to Brainerd police officers. He was right. Headed toward the picket line was a grim-faced young man who had just had all four tires of his car slashed while he was completing a shift at the struck plant.

40 years ago (1970)

Bids from six contractors for expansion and modernization of St. Joseph's Hospital were opened yesterday and all exceeded the amount budgeted for the project. Hospital officials will negotiate with state health officials to see what items can be deleted or changed.

60 years ago (1950)

Cuyuna Range sports fans staged one of the biggest celebrations in its history as they turned out to honor Jimmy Malosky in a Malosky Day program. Many Golden Gopher greats like Billy Bye and Ralph MacAlister were on hand for the festivities.

80 years ago (1930)

John Walter, of Third Avenue NE, punched out of life early today. His death came as the result of a stroke he suffered Sunday evening immediately after punching in for the 11 p.m. shift. He was a night watchman for the Northern Pacific Railway.

100 years ago (1910)
