Are you age 55 or older and don't consider yourself a senior? You may want to change your mind.
There's a place located in the heart of our community where laughter is heard, good times are shared and everyone is invited to join in the fun. The place is the Lakes Area Senior Activity Center, 803 Kingwood St., Brainerd. We are open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Members are age 55 or older. Your $15 annual membership entitles you to receive our 20-page monthly newsletter informing you on what happens at the center.
The lineup is impressive, check it out for yourself. Weekly activities include card games (bridge, 500, cribbage), bingo, open crafts, gift card recycling, rosemaling, folk painting, wood carving, Senior Morning Club, coffee and doughnuts, live band with dancing, exercise programs such as Bone Builders and Fun-n-Fitness. Monthly activities include a fundraising dinner, Out Going Seniors Group, Book Club, defensive driving refresher classes, computer classes, bus trips and free blood pressure checks. Yearly events include quilt bingo, craft and bake sales, plant festival, garage sale, Christmas Day dinner and more.

We also have more than 100 vendors in our Golden Years Gift Shop that make beautiful handcrafted items that are sold at reasonable prices. If you are looking for a unique gift, stop in Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for.
Volunteers assist with various areas of the day-to-day operations at the center. Our logged volunteer hours for 2007 were just under 13,000 hours. Our front desk receptionists and gift shop clerks are volunteers. Other areas where we utilize volunteers are for making doughnuts, gift card recyclers, fundraising dinners, garage sale, plant festival, exercise and computer class instructors, bingo callers, jam session band and more.
When you're here for an activity, event or program you don't need to leave for lunch. The Lutheran Social Services Dining Site is located in our building. You can have a nutritional lunch at a great price; $3.25 if you are 60 years of age or older or $6.10 if you are under age 60. The food is prepared on site by a great group of individuals and serving begins at 11:15 a.m.
Have you changed your mind? Do you want to be involved? If so, stop in at the center and we will give you a tour. If you have questions call 829-9345 and ask for DeAnn or Paula. Coffee is always on and we invite you to come in and join us.
DEANN BARRY is the Lakes Area Senior Activity Center director.
