Since her husband, Spec. Flannery Rardin, was deployed 16 months ago, Theresa Rardin of Brainerd and her four daughters have been ripping off a paper link on their homemade paper chain each Friday, a countdown of the weeks until he would return home from Iraq.

Smiths close the book
A musical group from Immanuel Lutheran Church in Crosby performed Saturday for more than 200 people who showed up at the Jessie F. Hallett Memorial Library to pay tribute to Jeanette and Bud Smith, who are retiring from the library after 30 years of service. LITTLE FALLS - Martha Schraut, 88-year-old resident of the Lutheran Care Center died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007, at St. Gabriel's Hospital in Little Falls, Minn.

PEQUOT LAKES - Patrick R. Montague, age 80, of Pequot Lakes, passed away Saturday morning, Jan. 13, 2007, at Bethany Good Samaritan Village in Brainerd.

Elly Birontas, age 81, of Brainerd, former resident of Nisswa, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007, at Bethany Good Samaritan Village. No services are planned.

LAKEVILLE - In the state's top gymnastics invitational Saturday the Brainerd Warriors saw the best talent in the state.

Braddix, Raiders outscore Vermilion
ELY - Kody Braddix poured in 28 points, while collecting eight assists, four steals and three blocks to lead the Central Lakes College Raiders men's basketball team over Vermilion 95-81 Saturday.

Flyers fall to to Ely
The Little Falls Flyers fell to Babbitt-Embarass-Ely 6-2 in non-conference girls' hockey Saturday.

Brian Reese is a senior at the Air Force Academy. A forward on the Falcons hockey team, Reese played several solid seasons for the Warriors before leaving his senior year to play in juniors.

Tesdahl reaches 1,000 points
CROSBY - Bryce Tesdahl eclipsed the 1,000 point mark of his high school career with a 29 point, nine rebound, seven assist performance against Duluth Marshall in a 87-46 non-conference boys' basketball win Saturday.

Top Warrior teams finish second and third
COLERAINE - The Brainerd Warriors Nordic ski teams were in pursuit Saturday in Mt. Itasca in Coleraine.

Duluth East beats Brainerd 6-1
DULUTH - Julius Tamasy scored the first goal of the game at the 2:54 mark of the first period, but Class 2A's 10th ranked Duluth East responded with three goals in both the second and third periods to win 6-1 Saturday in a Section 7-2A matchup.

Gobblers second, Road Crew fourth at Rick Lee
BEMIDJI - The Aitkin Gobblers picked up individual titles from Isaac Werner (103), Keith Wasserzieher (112), Justin Chouanard (140) and Nick Nadeau (heavyweight) to finish second at the Rick Lee wrestling invite Saturday.

Jensen and Rubin finish 4-0 to lead Warriors
MONTICELLO - Tyler Jensen and Nate Rubin each finished with 4-0 individual records as the Brainerd Warriors finished 3-1 at the Monticello duals tournament Saturday.

Little Falls wins 14th straight
DETROIT LAKES - Ben Hanowski recorded a hat trick to go with two assists leading the Class 1A's fifth-ranked Little Falls Flyers to a 7-3 victory over Detroit Lakes Saturday in non-conference boys' hockey.

Brainerd wins third-straight True Team
ALEXANDRIA - Evan Reese won the 100- and 50-yard freestyles and Jared Anderson won the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke to lead the Brainerd Warriors swimming and diving team to their third-straight Section 8-2A True Team Championship Saturday.
