In regard to the Brainerd School District closings or delays and in response to probably the last four or five years or even further back, we don't understand -- the public -- why Brainerd's playing this hard (and fast) attitude about closing the school for a day or delaying it for two hours. My only assumption can be they are more worried about getting their money per student than worrying about their safety. I think this is ridiculous. Maybe we need to get a new superintendent of schools or something for whoever makes these wise and goofy decisions.
It's no wonder it's so hard to find dedicated qualified coaches. To blame the current sixth- to eighth-grade coaches for our current varsity teams' shortcomings is a little unfair. Most of them didn't have anything to do with player development on this year's teams. Gym space shortages, too many games, too little practice time and parental interference are more likely culprits. Once a commitment is made to keep the stronger players in the program, our teams will improve.
Cold weather and school
I was just thinking that maybe Mr. Walseth would like to come to my children's bus stop the next time it is 45 below with the wind chill and stand around for 15 minutes or so. Maybe then he would delay school like everyone else in the area. Gov. Pawlenty said that he would not step in because he felt that the school districts were responsible enough to take care of it themselves. Obviously he hasn't heard about the Brainerd School District. Ask anyone. Brainerd doesn't close or delay, even though every other district in our area does.
