The Brainerd Warriors boys' swimming and diving team doubled its dual meet victory total Tuesday in a double-dual meet at the Brainerd High School pool.
The Warriors more than doubled up the Bemidji Lumberjacks for a 122-55 win and also beat the Grand Rapids Thunderhawks 115-71 to improve to 4-1 overall.
Brainerd accomplished both feats without Shaun Kennedy diving and with former teammate Peter Goeman swimming for Grand Rapids.
Last year, Goeman helped the Warriors' 200-yard freestyle and 200 medley relay teams place at the state meet. He also finished seventh at state in the 100 breaststroke.
The freshman won the breaststroke Tuesday at 1:05.55 and won the 200 individual medley, but it was Brainerd's medley relay and 200 relay that got the best of its former teammate.
"Pete is a great kid and we miss him, obviously," said Warriors coach John Zemke. "When you have a kid who's all-state in the breaststroke as an eighth-grader he's a special find and when he moves away it does hurt.
"We coach the kids we have here and we have great kids here in Brainerd. It was nice to see Pete."
Brainerd went on to win every other event against Grand Rapids. The Warriors lost just one event to Bemidji.
"The medley relay, that's the best time they've had all year," said Zemke. "In the 200 freestyle, Matt DesMarais had a good swim at 2:05. The same with Miles Krueger. It was nice to get him back. He came back with the same time he had before he left with a sore shoulder. Scott Antolak and Nate Tyner both had season bests in the 200 IM."
Even without Kennedy, who didn't dive because of an injury, Brainerd captured the diving thanks to Josh Olson's 199.45 points. The eighth-grader teamed with seventh-graders Scott Tetreault and Cody Thomsen to capture 11 points against Bemidji and seven against Grand Rapids.
Matt DesMarais of Brainerd won his 200-yard freestyle heat race.
"The two seventh-graders just started diving this year," said Zemke. "They dove really well and they got some great experience in this meet. We're really happy with the way they are progressing and the way Josh is progressing."
All three teams swim at the same time, times are tallied and the results are broken down to Brainerd against Bemidji, Bemidji against Grand Rapids and Grand Rapids against Brainerd.
So Brainerd senior Miles Krueger's time of 1:59.24 in the 200 freestyle gave him wins over Bemidji and Grand Rapids.
With the unique format, Zemke didn't have trouble preparing his lineup. The trouble has been getting all his swimmers healthy and present at race time. That's something he hopes to accomplish Thursday when Brainerd hosts Sauk Rapids.
"We're just waiting for a meet where we can have everybody at full strength," said Zemke. "It hasn't happened yet. Hopefully, we'll get Shaun back and we'll be cruising."
