WALKER -- The man who last May set fire to dumpsters in Walker and Pine River, a mobile home in Walker and the old Jenkins School has been ordered to pay $40,000 restitution.
Richard Allen Hassel, 29, Minneapolis, is concurrently serving 23 months in a Minnesota state corrections facility for a Cass County second-degree arson count and 15 months for a Crow Wing County third-degree arson count.
He was ordered to pay the restitution from prison earnings. Any remaining balance will be converted to a judgment.
Hassel had been drinking at a Walker bar and restaurant May 21 before beginning his arson spree with a dumpster in Walker. He then set on fire a model mobile home at Northland Homes at the Y Junction of Highways 371 and 200 south of Walker.
He set dumpsters on fire in Pine River later that night before proceeding to Jenkins where he set the school ablaze.
Hassel formerly was a volunteer firefighter in the Twin Cities.
