Ward announces vacancies on Minnesota Council on Disability

Posted: Wednesday, January 13, 2010

State Rep. John Ward, DFL-Brainerd, announced Tuesday there will be 13 vacancies by the end of this month on the Minnesota Council on Disability.

The council is in need of citizens eager to participate in the development of disability public policy. The council would like to have a member from each development region throughout the state.

"If you care about the issues our friends and family members with disabilities face, or if you are a member of this community, this is a great opportunity to get involved," Ward said. "We've come a long way, but there are still challenges to address and opportunities to advance."

Members of the council work closely in advising state and local government officials, community organizations that do business with the disability community and the public on human rights matters. They also educate these groups on the impact public policy has on people with physical, sensory, mental or emotional disabilities.

The majority of council members are persons with disabilities. Meetings take place four times a year in St. Paul. Those interested in applying for membership may do so by contacting the council (651) 361-7800 or e-mailing at council.disability@state.mn.us.
