The Brainerd boys' swim team won six events but dropped the meet at St. Cloud Tech by a score of 95-73. Mark Schmitz won the 50 and 100-yard freestyles, Lance Hoff paced the 200 and 500-yard freestyles and Steve Piepgras won the 100-yard backstroke.

Irene (Ike) Smedley, enjoying her top season of 600 counts, rolled a 645 at LaGuyal Lanes in the Mixed Doubles League for her first 600 of the new year. She rolled three 600 counts in December, and the highest count of her career, a 654, in November.

Tracy Berkey, of Clough Lake, in a surprise move, pleaded guilty in district court to third degree burglary and was sentenced to five years at Stillwater. He had been shot and captured by Brainerd police when trying to escape from a theft at Time Jewelry.

Four affidavits charging contempt of court in connection with child welfare matters were filed in district court last month, according to the December report of Rebecca Cassell of the County Child Welfare Board.
100 years ago (1910)
Ezra Smith of Brainerd, Michael Toole of Cass Lake and a Duluth man were appointed by Judge Morris as commissioners in the condemnation proceedings necessary to the building of a reservoir dam at Gull Lake.
