Roy Merle Sargent, 87, Brainerd, passed away at Woodland Good Samaritan Village on Jan. 9, 2009. Roy was born Sept. 8, 1921, to Lee and Leah (Green) Sargent in Quimby, Iowa. He attended Quimby Consolidated School for 12 years, graduating in 1939. He was accepted for flight training in the U.S. Navy and later transferred to the Marine Corps during WWII. He saw duty in the South Pacific as a pilot flying torpedo bombers.
Roy married Mildred Peterson on Oct. 5, 1946. They purchased a farm in Daggett Brook Township where they lived for 60 years. They attended the South Long Lake Presbyterian Church where he served as trustee, elder, clerk of session for 35 years and Sunday school superintendent for 20 years.
He enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening and hunting, especially grouse hunting with a good dog out front.
He is survived by several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred; parents; brother, Archie; four sisters, Mae Conley, Gladys Pennington, Hazel Farwell and Ruby Irwin.
Services will be held on Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009, at South Long Lake Presbyterian Church in Brainerd at 11 a.m. with Pastors Bob Kemper and Dwight Johnson officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church. Military rites provided by the VFW Post No. 1647. Interment will be at the Hillside Cemetery in Long Lake Township.
Memorials are preferred to the Brainerd Area Habitat for Humanity or Gideons International.
