PINE RIVER -- Pine River Mayor Robert Fladung recognized three businesses Tuesday with Mayor's Awards for improving the city by remodeling their business buildings in 1999.
Those include Dr. Michael Marvin of Eye Care Associates, Bill and Carol Johnson of Johnson Oil and Charlotte Heino of Charlotte's O'Hair Beauty Salon.
Council member Merril Nelson reported the new Pine River Chamber of Commerce and visitor center building along the Paul Bunyan Trail has been enclosed. Interior finish work is in process, he said.
Building inspector Jeff Melberg reported Kitchigami Regional Library's central office and warehouse building is in the framing stages.
Carol Christensen, Pine River Housing Authority, reported Rural Development Agency funding is being sought to offer 18 rental unit town homes. If funded, these will provide more affordable housing in Pine River for working families, she said.
Heartland and Norway Brook Apartments will begin offering assisted living services under a contract with an area home care service, Christensen said. This will be an option tenants can use as needed, she said.
For some, it will give needed help when people are recovering from a hospitalization. For others, it will mean they can remain in their own apartment much longer before entering a nursing home, she said.
