The St. Joseph's Medical Center Community Parish Nurse Program has completed its third annual Parish Nurse Preparation Course. Sixteen nurses were dedicated at ceremonies at Park United Methodist Church on Sunday, Dec. 13.

Cher Nelson, parish nurse coordinator, said there are now 54 parish nurses serving 37 congregations of all denominations in the Brainerd lakes area. Other area parish nurse networks include the Parish Nurse Collaborative in Little Falls and the Parish Nurse Partnership of Central Minnesota in St. Cloud.
Parish nurses counsel people about health related issues, listening and offering support, visiting people in homes, hospital and care facilities; provide education that may include assisting with lifestyle changes, leading health education classes, providing health screenings and developing support groups; advocate for people in understanding medical tests, treatments, and empowering them to make good health care choices; facilitate recruitment and coordination of volunteers to meet the needs within the congregation and local community; help people understand the relationship between body, mind and spirit and support people through prayer and presence; link people to community resources and assist them to obtain needed health services.
