The Brainerd Warrior dance team "popped" its way into first place Thursday in the Central Lakes Conference jazz meet at Apollo High School in St. Cloud.
The dance team, which danced to "Popcorn" in its popcorn bucket costumes, earned perfect scores in visual effectiveness and creativity as well as presentation to help them win the CLC jazz division, said Head Coach Cindy Clough.
Thursday's meet was a night of firsts for the Warriors. Clough said it was the first time Brainerd had earned a 10 in the jazz division and it was the team's first time performing its new jazz routine this season.
"We're happy on our performance," said Clough. "We got lots of good scores and so now we need to add more difficulty to it."
Clough said she's always analyzing the team's scores to see where the dance members can improve. She said the team will be working on its turn techniques and leaps and jumps.
"We were neck and neck with (St. Cloud) Tech at the competition and these were the areas where we were close with them," said Clough. "There was only a five overall point difference with us and Tech."
Behind Brainerd, St. Cloud placed second, Sartell third, St. Cloud Apollo fourth, Sauk Rapids fifth, Alexandria sixth, Fergus Falls seventh and Willmar eighth.
Winning the jazz meet puts Brainerd in a good position in its conference this season, since it also won the kick conference meet in December. The team's scores from the two meets will count for one-half of the team's score at the conference championship meet Jan. 24 in Willmar.
The Warriors next meet is Tuesday at Sauk Rapids High School.
