The frustration had been building for two periods for the Brainerd boys' hockey team until it boiled over with the Warriors netting four goals in the third period to give them a 4-0 win over the Alexandria Cardinals in Central Lakes Conference play Tuesday at Brainerd Area Civic Center.
The Warriors outshot Alexandria 23-11 through the first two periods but had nothing to show for it on the scoreboard. That is until Bronson Shepherd, Joe Frazer and Colby Ring came up big in the third period by scoring all four of Brainerd's goals.
"We had been playing pretty good but the frustration of not scoring was mounting," Warriors coach Ty Eigner said. "But once we got rolling we were pretty hard to stop."
Joe Frazer had two straight goals
Shepherd took a pass down the wing from Drew Olson to score the Warriors' first goal. Frazer then followed with two straight goals and Ring, a defenseman, scored the first varsity goal of his career to wrap up the scoring.
"Joe's line played very well," Eigner said, "Bronson even had a goal disallowed in the second period. We talked to that line the other day about asserting themselves more and they really went out there and created some good scoring chances.
"We kept telling the kids to stay with it, stay positive and not get too frustrated and the goals would come. Even though we didn't score in the first two periods it was good to see them getting the chances."
The Warriors' defense turned in a solid performance and they handcuffed Alexandria all game long, limiting the Cardinals to just 15 shots on goal.
"Defensively we tried to keep things simple and keep play in (the Alexandria) end," said Eigner. "When called upon Landon (Snider) and he came up with some good saves in goal. The kids are starting to understand that if you play solid team defense we have the goalie that will give us a chance to win each night."
