Heartland Poets, a local chapter of the League of Minnesota Poets, will meet 6 to 10 p.m. Friday in the large room at the Brainerd Public Library.
Alan and Claire Downes, St. Cloud, will conduct a brief business meeting. Maxine Russell, LOMP Poet Laureate, will present a review of "Savage Beast: The Life and Poetry of Edna St. Vincent Millay" by Nancy Milford. Included in this program will be the actual voice of Millay reading her own poetry.
Those present will read and share their personal poetry. It is helpful to bring copies so others may view it. This program is free and open to the public.
Southeast Brainerd housing meeting set
A meeting for people interested in home ownership in southeast Brainerd is set from 8 to 10 a.m. Friday at Temple Baptist Church's education building on Oak and 10th streets in southeast Brainerd.
The group has been meeting monthly to keep up on housing programs in the area.

CLC student awarded scholarship
Rachel Cox, a Central Lakes College criminal justice student, was awarded a scholarship from the Minnesota Association of County Probation Officers to attend their winter training conference today and Friday in St. Cloud.
The conference is titled "Immigration & Probation -- Working Together."
Cox is a freshman from Windom working toward an associate in arts degree.
The conference is for mental health practitioners, social workers, judges, prosecutors, probation/parole officers and law enforcement officials.
Town meetings set Saturday
State Sen. Don Samuelson, DFL-Brainerd, will conduct town meetings for the next six weeks to receive comments from people on issues that will be discussed in the upcoming legislative session that begins Jan. 29.
The first town meetings will be Saturday. Samuelson will be at the Brainerd Public Library from 10 a.m. to noon and at Baxter City Hall from 1 to 2:30 p.m.
Issues that may be discussed include the state budget deficit, health care, education, transportation and plans for a professional sports stadium.
Town meetings also will be scheduled for Little Falls, Pierz, Randall, Motley, Swanville, Pillager, Fort Ripley, Garrison, Crosslake, Pequot Lakes and Nisswa.
