The Brainerd school board has approved the hiring of a coach and participation of a downhill ski team in four meets this season. Jim Ruttger, former Brainerd alpine ski racer, was hired as coach upon recommendation of Ron Stolski, athletic director.

The biggest Paul Bunyan Snowmobile Derby yet got off to a roaring start this morning at Donnybrooke Race Course. Officials said entries hit the 700 mark, compared to last year's 450. Races started today on both the big endurance track and the small oval.

Approximately 1,000 members of the Brainerd railroad shop crafts and their families were scheduled to accompany a Northern Pacific excursion to the Twin Cities for a basketball game in honor of Brainerd's Whitey Skoog, at the University of Minnesota.
80 years ago (1930)
There are dogs and dogs, and the often used term booze hound became a reality when Harry Gorst was rabbit hunting and his dog found a cache of moonshine. A raid on his house resulted in arrest, arraignment and sentencing in the speedy time of half-an-hour.
100 years ago (1910)
The secretary of the board of education will receive sealed bids in his Brainerd office for 500 cords of green jack pine wood, to be delivered at the various school buildings in the city. Wood must be sound body pine, four feet in length and no second growth pine.
