Make way for snowmobile groomersbr>
CROSSLAKE - The Crosslake Community Center and the Ideal SnoPro's Snowmobile Club have requested that area residents and businesses not pile plowed snow on the snowmobile trails.
Businesses are asked to remind whomever they hire to plow their parking lots not to pile the snow on the trail as it is hard on the grooming equipment.
The snowmobile trails are currently maintained by local snowmobile clubs, who depend on donations by and support from businesses.
For more information about the "Support the Trails" program, call the Brainerd Lakes Chamber at 828-2838 or (800) 450-2838. Individual donations are welcome and can be forwarded to the Chamber at 7393 State Highway 371, Brainerd, MN 56401.
Spring term at CLC to start Monday
Two Central Lakes College construction projects valued at $5.9 million are expected to be ready for students when the spring term begins in Brainerd and Staples.
The spring term starts Monday for most students at the community and technical college.
The larger of the two projects, a 30,000-square-foot maintenance shop for the Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance program at Staples, will be in full use Feb. 19 for that program's spring term. It was essentially completed almost four months ahead of schedule.
The HEOM program is about halfway through its 39-day winter term.
The facility features a nine-bay, state-of-the-art maintenance and repair shop with large overhead doors. The $4.8 million addition replaced a much smaller, less efficient, 30-year-old shop.
The 4,500-square-foot music rehearsal addition in Brainerd was finished close to its forecast date of substantial completion. It was built for $1.1 million. Choral and instrumental groups will occupy the space, which will double as a recital hall.
Rising enrollment trends among students in both music and heavy equipment had driven the projects, which were five years in the making. Each project received thorough scrutiny from both the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities and legislators before becoming priorities as higher education investments.
Enrollment continues to show an upward trend at CLC, with preliminary indications of a 6 percent increase from a year ago. That should rise when concurrent enrollment counts are finalized with area high schools hosting college-level courses through CLC.
Numbers traditionally fluctuate during the first five days of the term, a drop-add period that allows penalty-free schedule adjustments.
