Donna Salli of Brainerd, a Central Lakes College English instructor, won second place in a Minnesota Literature essay contest.
The publishers of the monthly newsletter for writers selected her essay as one of the best in a field of outstanding submissions. Salli received $150 as a contest runner-up.
At 4 p.m. Jan. 18, Salli will join two other essay winners to read their entries at Chet's Taverna at 791 Raymond Ave., St. Paul. Her essay also will be published in the newsletter.
The contest guidelines specified the topic, "the book that had the greatest impact on you." She wrote about "The Awakening" by Kate Chopin, which Salli had read during her senior year of college.
Salli has an essay and a poem in the current issue of Lake Country Journal magazine.
She is the author of an essay published in the Duluth-based Lake Superior Magazine. "The Clothespin Thief" comes from Salli's childhood in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where she observed the antics of a crow as recounted in the illustrated, two-page essay found in the November 2003 issue.
