Fishing report

By Outdoor News

BRAINERD/NISSWA

Walleyes, northern pike and panfish have been real active on most area lakes. Leading the way are lakes such as Gull, Round, North Long, Nisswa, Upper Gull and Margaret. Shiner or rainbow minnows are working for walleyes while waxworms or larvae have worked best for panfish. Anglers have started to drive on many lakes in this area.

CROSS LAKE

Pine, Loon, North Long and Mission lakes have been good places to find crappies. Area walleyes have been active, as well, favoring jigs tipped with fatheads or shiners. Fish them in 20 to 26 feet of water. Northern pike anglers are using northern minnows with tip-ups and finding fish around points and sunken islands.

LEECH LAKE

The hot walleye action on Leech Lake has kept a lot of anglers busy again this week. Hit Walker Bay and the reefs near Whipholt on the south shore. Reefs that top out from 20 to 40 feet of water are all producing walleyes, especially during low light periods of the day. Perch fishing has been much more inconsistent. The best perch bite has been near Bear Island and near Whipholt in 11 to 14 feet of water. Larger jigs tipped with whole minnows have produced bigger perch. Northern pike action in Steamboat Bay is still going strong.

MILLE LACS

In the east, walleye action has been spotty, while perch continue to be the big talk throughout the lake. Look for good perch activity in the bays around 8 to 12 feet of water and on the main lake in 20 feet. Check with local resorts and tackle shops for ice conditions.

In the west, there has been some decent walleye and perch activity in 18 to 24 feet of water in the bays and off the rock points. Ivan's jigs tipped with a fathead minnow have worked well, although a few bigger walleyes and the occasional northern pike have hit golden shiner minnows and plain hooks.

ORTONVILLE

Look for some decent walleye action around the islands, Rocky Ledge and Shady Beach areas on Big Stone Lake. Most of these fish have been in the 15- to 17-inch class. Long Tom Lake is kicking out crappies and perch. Lake Traverse has started providing steady walleye activity.

PINE RIVER

Pelican Lake is giving up walleyes in 25 feet of water. Pine Mountain Lake continues to produce northern pike. Sunfish have been active on Whitefish Lake in 14 to 16 feet of water. Ada Lake and Upper Whitefish are safe bets for crappies in 22 feet of water.

RAINY LAKE

Look for some walleyes in 30 feet of water. The American Narrows and Sand Bay have been a couple of consistent areas this week. On the Canadian side, anglers have caught crappies up to 3 pounds with some 2-pound fish showing up pretty regularly.

SAUK CENTRE

Lake Reno continues to produce walleyes in 17 feet of water. The west end of Reno has also provided numbers of good size perch. On Sauk Lake, the area just west of Diamond Point is kicking out crappies in 20 to 25 feet of water. Look for some steady crappie action on East Long Lake also. Big Birch is a safe bet for walleyes, although you'll have to sort through some small fish here.

STARBUCK

Lake Emily is kicking out walleyes in 4 feet of water. Limits have been common on shiner minnows. Lake Minnewaska is producing a lot of walleyes as well. The best bite has been during the evening hours in 12 to 25 feet of water. Lake Reno continues to produce limits of walleyes as well.

TWIN CITIES

In the central metro, lakes Calhoun and Harriet have produced a few walleyes this week. The north end of Lake Nokomis is kicking out crappies. Northern pike are hitting just about everywhere, although you'll find a few bigger fish on lakes Marion and Crystal. Highland Lake and Bush Lake should be looked at for panfish as well. Ice depths vary in this area so check it before you go out.

In the northeast metro, Northern pike are hitting along the weed edges on White Bear, Forest and Big Marine lakes. Bald Eagle Lake, White Bear and Green Lake are this areas best bets for walleyes. Crappie have been active on the north end of Bald Eagle Lake. Little Lake has produced sunfish in recent days.

In the northwest metro, the walleye and crappie bite on Buffalo Lake has been excellent in 18 feet of water. Crappies up to 1 pound have been common. Pelican Lake is kicking out northern pike and crappies, as is Maple Lake. Look for some sunfish on Maple as well. For the most part, you'll find 6 to 10 inches of ice in these areas.

On Lake Minnetonka, jigs and rainbow minnows are producing walleyes in 17 feet of water on Lake Minnetonka. Look for the sharpest break you can find adjacent to weeds and you'll hit fish during the evening hours. Northern pike are hitting on most metro lakes in 15 feet of water. Look to the smaller bays on Lake Minnetonka for sunfish in 10 to 12 feet, and you'll find steady crappie activity in these same areas in slightly deeper water.

On Lake Waconia, there has been a variety in sizes for walleyes this week. Look for the best action early and late in the day on Lake Waconia. Look to the weedy areas of the lake in 8 to 12 feet of water. There has been some deep water action as well, near structures, in 18 to 22 feet. Keggs Reef and Cemetary Reef are two better areas. There are sunfish biting during the day in 6 to 10 feet of water. You'll have to sort through these fish but there are keeping size sunfish being caught. Cemetery Reef is holding crappies again this week. Numbers of 4- to 7-pound northern pike are hitting along the vegetated areas of the lake.

WILLMAR

Look to Green Lake and Lake Norway for some steady walleye action in 10 to 25 feet, depending on the lake. Norway and Games Lake have provided steady crappie action this week. Hit Lake Florida and Lake Sullivan for good northern pike action.
