Ice racing returns to Garrison

The International Ice Racing Association opens it season this weekend on Garrison Bay on Mille Lacs Lake.

There are six classes of cars racing in the series, four modified and two stock. The typical race weekend includes practice and qualifying sessions, one-half hour rubber-to-ice studded sprint and solo (rookie) sprint races on Saturdays, with a half-hour studded sprint race and two-plus hour endurance race on Sundays.

The series also returns to Garrison Bay the following weekend.

2004 points champions include Jonathan Schmetz in SGT, Daniel Burhams in ST, Dave McGovern in GTX, John Kochevar in GTXLT and Len Jackson in GTO.

Garrison's Bucky Weitnauer finished 12th in a SGT race last year.

Area racers win classes

Kylie Abrahamson of Brainerd, Devin Bertoch of Baxter and Dan Ebert of Lake Shore won their respective classes in a WSA Minnesota North Regional Snocross last weekend at Park X on Quadna Mountain near Hill City.

Abrahamson won Pro Am Women, Bertoch won Sport Stock and Ebert won Semi Pro Open.

Ebert also finished second and third in Semi Pro Performance and Semi Pro Stock.

Other podium (first- through third-place) finishers were Bertoch, second in Junior 16-17; April Moritz of Emily, second in Pro Am Women; Andy Moritz of Emily, second in Sport Fan; Brett Abrahamson of Brainerd, third in Semi Pro Open and Semi Pro Performance; and Josh Goble of Baxter, third in Pro Open.

Sport Stock: 7 - Trevor Johnson, Brainerd, 12 - Kylie Abrahamson.

Sport Performance: 6 - Johnson, 12 - Bertoch.

Sport Open: 7 - Bertoch

Semi Pro Stock: 5 - Brett Abrahamson, Brainerd.

Women's Stock: 5- Natalie Moritz, Emily.

+ 45: 6 - Steve Sherwood, Pine River.

Schellbach clicks off

156 mph pass

Rick Schellbach of Rush City posted the fastest speed, 156.020 mph, on his ultra mod snowmobile Saturday during the 32nd annual Paul Bunyan Time Trials at Ernie's on Gull Lake.

Schellbach also won the open modified-1100 class with his pass. Darwin Posterick of Randall was the only area racer to win in the open modified division.

Aboard his Anderson-Rotax sled, he posted a 121.534 mph pass to win the OM-0-550 class. Dale Robinson of Wadena, aboard his 1995 Polaris, was second in the class at 89.711 mph.

Robert Newman of Little Falls also placed second in the OM-600 class with a pass at 109.969 mph.

Outlaws return to Princeton

The World of Outlaws Series returns July 29-30 to Princeton Speedway.

This two-day event is among the series' 97 events. The series also will travel July 1-2 to Red River Valley Speedway in Fargo, N.D.
