COLERAINE -- Five biathletes from Nisswa NW Biathlon Club competed last week at Mt. Itasca in the head-to-head trials for positions on the U.S. World Junior Championship Team that will compete in France in January.
Wynn Roberts, 15, of Battle Lake, had the highest finish for the Nisswa club in the youth men's race. He was fifth, missing fourth by less than one percentage point.
In the last race of the series Roberts missed five shots, but managed to ski fast enough to close within 15 seconds of Mark Johnson of Grand Rapids who was fourth. Each miss requires a 150-meter penalty loop before going back on the ski course.
Derrek Matson, 18, of Brainerd finished 14th and Jared Asmus, 18, of Little Falls was 15th.
In the youth women's event, Brainerd's Rebecca Mueller, 16, and Katherine Mueller, 13, finished ninth and 10th, respectively.
In her best race, the 10km pursuit format with four shooting stages, Rebecca Mueller finished sixth for those carrying rifles, with five misses in 20 shots and 90.73 percent back time.
The trials were conducted over a 5-day period with the best two of three races counted for each athlete on a percent back basis. Competitors from Minnesota, Alaska, Colorado, Vermont, Maine and New York competed for team positions.
