With a $3 million budget deficit looming ahead, the Brainerd School Board Tuesday appointed board member Bernie Roberts, a certified financial planner, as board chair.
Roberts has served on the board for 12 years and has served as board chair before. Bob Nystrom served as board chair last year, relinquishing his seat at the board table to Roberts.
"Bob, you've done a great job as an ambassador for the board," Roberts told Nystrom. "I think you make everyone feel at ease."
Roberts said there are many challenges ahead for the school district this year and the board needs to take advantage of those challenges. He said the district needs to work with the community to resolve the difficult financial decisions that need to be made by board members by July 1.
Roberts is an investment representative with Edward Jones in Brainerd.
Board member Lew Hudson, who celebrated his 55th wedding anniversary with his wife, Irma, Tuesday, was appointed vice chair of the board.
Board member Kent Montgomery was appointed clerk/treasurer.
In other business, the board:
Set school board salaries at $350 a month, a figure that has remained the same since 1986.
Adopted the revised transportation policy.
Designated the Dispatch as its official newspaper for 2005.
Established the dates of the 2005 board meetings.
