Walters heads Crow Wing board

Posted: Wednesday, January 05, 2005

Gary Walters is the new Crow Wing County Board chairman.

Tuesday the board met for the first time this year to reorganize. Commissioner Ed Larsen was named vice chairman.

Walters asked for a presentation on the history of Central Minnesota Community Corrections and information from its probation operations. Larsen suggested a variety of 15-minute reports on county operations would be helpful, such as one on emergency management.

The county board expects to meet for a lengthy session on Jan. 11. Auditor Roy Luukkonen reminded commissioners that committee appointments need to be finalized by Jan. 25.

The board received a legal opinion from John Sausen, assistant county attorney, on whether the board of adjustment and planning commission needed to share a member. Commissioners thought they may make the appointment more appealing if one individual did not have a meeting every Thursday night.

Sausen reported state statute requires the connection between the two commissions.

The board asked for another legal opinion from Don Ryan, county attorney, and from the Association of Minnesota Counties. Commissioners noted another option may be reducing the number of board of adjustment meetings.

Larsen said the board of adjustment's workload has decreased.
