Zelinske gets 100th career win; BHS wrestlers take 3rd

CAMBRIDGE -- Brainerd Warrior wrestler Tom Zelinske made a little history Saturday at the Cambridge-Isanti Bluejacket Invitational.

Not only did the senior win the Warriors' only championship at 130-pounds, but it also gave him 100 career wins. Brainerd finished third as a team with 144 points. Cambridge-Isanti won the team title with 183 points.

Zelinske defeated Bemidji's Joe Anderson by a slim 6-5 decision. But it was his semifinal match that gave him the momentum going into the final match.

"Tom really wrestled smart all day long," Warriors coach Bob Brakke said. "In the semis he got a take down, but more than that Tom took his opponents' confidence, pinning him in the third."

Brakke also pointed out that Zelinske has a good chance of making even more history.

"Tom has a good chance to move ahead of Jim Caughey in career wins for second place," said Brakke. "Any time you get 100 wins in a career you've been successful. But I think he would give that all up in order to place at the state meet."
