20 years ago (1989)

Westgate Mall in Brainerd and Baxter, one of 30,123 parcels of real estate listed for sale by the federal government, may come under new ownership. The mall, and one in Albert Lea, was owned by Broadview Federal Savings, which was taken over by the feds.

30 years ago (1979)

Brainerd City Council officials heard differing views from state legislators concerning the prospects for a local option bill on fluoride. Rep. Nelsen of Aitkin said the time is right for such a bill, but Sen. Rued and Rep. Thiede said the bill would have little hope to pass.

40 years ago (1969)

Some 5,000 spectators and 200 entrants turned out for two days of snowmobile racing at Merrifield over the weekend. The big winner was Jerry Rudbeck who took top honors in two races on Saturday and came back to do the trick again on Sunday.

60 years ago (1949)

Oscar Orman, Federated Shopcraft candidate from the NP shops, was elected by members of the Brainerd City Council to fill the unexpired term of Melford Kurz as alderman from the First Ward. The election was completed by secret ballot.

80 years ago (1929)

100 years ago (1909)

Adolph Peterson, convicted of second degree manslaughter for the killing of Gallagher at Cuyuna on Thanksgiving, was given a sentence of only 18 months hard labor. Judge McClenahan said Peterson was more the victim of whiskey than a criminal heart.
