Dear Heloise: Should leftover, unused flour be kept in the pantry, refrigerator or freezer? Thank you. -- Gail, Via E-mail
We took your question to a leading flour manufacturer, and here is what a representative told us: Once you open a flour bag, it is recommended to place the remaining flour in an airtight glass or plastic container.
It is OK to keep flour in the refrigerator or the freezer in a sealed container so it doesn't absorb odors. But before you use it, you will need to let it warm to room temperature. A few cups will take about 20 minutes to warm up. -- Heloise
Dear Heloise: After preparing fish for dinner, the odor always lingers in the house for days. Do you have any suggestions on how to get rid of the smell? -- Trish Green, Via E-mail
The easiest and best way to get rid of that annoying fish odor is by boiling 1/2 cup vinegar and 1/2 cup water in a saucepan on low heat. Even just placing a cup of vinegar on the kitchen counter will help. -- Heloise
Dear Heloise: My boys love breakfast sandwiches. I cook some sausage patties and put them on biscuits with or without cheese. I also make egg-and-cheese sandwiches on English muffins. I freeze them in wax paper and then microwave them as desired. It's convenient for those rushed mornings, and the boys get a hot breakfast. -- Anne E. Kremer, Palmdale, Calif.
