HACKENSACK -- On Saturday, Jan. 19, an instructor at Deep Portage Conservation Reserve will set up participants with a pair of snowshoes and give basic instruction in the proper use.

The Winter Rendezvous is scheduled Jan. 26 at Deep Portage. The rendezvous consists of outdoor winter activities designed for families. Games include rabbit sticks, fry pan toss, races and the tomahawk toss.

Deep Portage to offer summer camps
HACKENSACK -- Deep Portage Conservation Reserve, Hackensack, will offer the following summer camps for young outdoor enthusiasts.
-- Aquatics/Fishing Camp (ages 9-14), July 28-Aug. 2.
-- Forkhorn I Deer Hunting Camp, which includes DNR Firearms Safety, (ages 12-16), sponsored by the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association: Session I, June 16-21; Session II, June 23-28; Session III, June 30-July 5.
-- Forkhorn II Advanced Deer Hunting Camp (ages 13-16), sponsored by the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association, July 14-19.
-- Upland Bird Hunting Camp (ages 12-16), sponsored by the Ruffed Grouse Society, July 21-26.
-- Young Women in Science Camp (ages 12-16), July 21-26.

Deep Portage schedules adult outdoor schools
HACKENSACK -- Deep Portage Conservation Reserve will offer the following schools and workshops designed for sportsmen/women interested in improving their skills.
Beginning Fly Fishing School, May 24-26, limited to 16 participants. Instructor will be Bob White, 1988 Fly Rod & Reel "Guide of the Year" and international fly fishing guide.
This course will cover the basics of fly fishing, including equipment selection, fly casting, knot and tackle craft, fly selection and design, basic entomology and on the water fishing techniques.
Cost is $175, which includes instruction, food and lodging.
Wingshooting schools: Session I, June 7-9, limited to 12 participants; Session II, Aug. 23-25, limited to 12 participants.
The Deep Portage Chapter of the Ruffed Grouse Society and King's Shooting Sports will teach these schools, which are designed to teach the basics of good wingshooting technique. Instructors teach a modified "Churchill" method of instinctive shooting. The course covers safe gun handling, gun selection and gun fit.
Instructors instill proper wingshooting technique, including grip, stance, pre-mount, mount and swing. Classroom knowledge will be augmented with shooting on the sporting clays range. Student to instructor ratio is 4:1.
Cost is $275, which includes instruction, food, lodging and targets.
