Area Girl Scout is contest winner

BAXTER -- Monica Schrader, a Cadette Girl Scout in Troop No. 712 from Baxter, was the first-place winner of the Holiday Card Contest in the Cadette (grades 6-9) level.

Her design featured a scarecrow with a pile of leaves, a rake, pumpkins and the saying, "Happy Harvest."

"I chose to draw the scarecrow and leaves because this is what I think of when I think of fall. It wouldn't be a true fall without leaves. When I picture fall and all the activities, I think of playing in the leaves, carving pumpkins and making scarecrows," Schrader said.

Girl Scouts-Land of Lakes Council sponsored a Holiday Card Contest featuring a fall theme. The contest was open to all Girl Scouts in kindergarten through 12th grade. This contest encourages young girls to explore their creative talents through the use of art.

Schrader will be recognized in the January issue of the Happenings newsletter that is mailed to more than 7,000 girls and adults and will receive recognition at the council's recognition celebration on April 20 in St. Cloud. All first-place winners will receive an art kit to encourage them to pursue their interest in art.
