Brainerd man hurt in crash

ONAMIA -- An 18-year-old Brainerd man was injured after crashing his vehicle while being pursued by Mille Lacs Tribal Police Tuesday.

The accident happened about 1:50 a.m. on Highway 169, three miles south of Onamia, the State Patrol reported.

Matthew Helmin, being pursued after not stopping for a traffic stop, lost control of his vehicle, struck a tree and rolled the vehicle, the State Patrol said. Helmin was thrown from the vehicle.

Helmin suffered a broken leg. He was initially treated at Mille Lacs Health System in Onamia, then transferred to St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd. No information was available on his condition today.
