AITKIN — New players were among the many individuals who helped the Brainerd Lumberjacks to a 34-14 win over the Minneapolis Silverbacks in the Mojo Hydrate Elite Bowl game Saturday night.
“We had about eight new guys on the team, who represented us very well,” Lumberjacks coach J.J. Kern said.
One of them was running back James Macey, who rushed 22 times for 165 yards and a TD.
Another was quarterback Delector Swanigan Jr., who threw for 250 yards and two TDs.
“We were up 26-6 at halftime, we played very well,” Kern said. “The other team played well and played hard. They had a defensive tackle who was 6-6, and 360 pounds, who played for Clemson. He definitely was a load to take care of, but we did the best we could on him.”
Kern said defensive backs Dante Mathis and Seth Gilke are “phenomenal football players. Seth started for Wyoming, Dante’s at the same level.”
Veteran Lumberjack Ra Ra Jones collected 175 yards in receiving with two TDs.
Kern said safety Marc Hummel of Pequot Lakes “played very well” and cornerback Brandon Jedlinski intercepted two passes.
