And they’re off.
The Brainerd Lumberjacks, the area’s semi-pro football team, will conduct its first practice of the season at noon, Saturday, March 24, at either Harvey Shew Field or the gymnasium at Franklin Arts Center in Brainerd.
The Lumberjacks’ schedule is posted at www.brainerdlumberjacks.com.
Brainerd opens the season May 6 at Minot, N.D. It’s the first game of a four-game road series that has the Lumberjacks playing the Twin Cities Titans at Irondale, the Granite City Renegades at St. Cloud and the Twin City Rhinos in Burnsville, before they play their first home game June 9 against the Lakes Area Terror.
New this year for all Lumberjack home games are community non-profit days sponsored by local businesses. The local boys and girls club will have a day as will Kinship Partners where children get into games for free.
Lumberjacks head coach and owner J.J. Kern is excited about this partnership with non-profits. He called it a win-win.
“With no (Northwoods) league baseball in the area this year, we want to fill that void for quality, inexpensive family entertainment,” Kern said. “By having these non-profit days, we’re getting young fans in the stands, which is what we want. We want people cheering for us. They get in free so it doesn’t cost the organization or the mentors anything.”
The Lumberjacks will play five home games, excluding playoffs.
Kern said if an organization wants to have a day, or if there are interested sponsors for a day, they should call him at 831-1400.
Any player interested in trying out for the Lumberjacks as they begin their fourth season can also call Kern.
