Summer solace: Blueflags in bloom
A bumblebee hovered over a northern harlequin blueflag iris in a pond Monday, June 25, along the Paul Bunyan Trail near Merrifield.
There are two varieties of blueflag iris in Minnesota, with the Minneapolis-St. Paul area being the dividing area, according to Minnesota Wildflowers, a nonprofit information source. The southern variety is lighter blue with a yellow dot on the throat.
The perennial wildflower grows on the edges of streams and ponds and blooms from May to August. From a photographer's perspective, the flower is hard to photograph without getting wet feet.
