BARROWS — Dan Ebert built on his points lead in the Midwest Modified points race, and gained on Shane Sabraski in the A-Modified points race with two wins at North Central Speedway Saturday night.
Ebert started from row four in the Midwest Modified feature and battled Travis Wermter and Sabraski before taking the lead for good with three laps left, and holding on for the victory.
Wermter took the lead on the green flag and kept in front of Tom Gill for the first four laps. Sabraski worked his way into second place on lap four, and Ebert moved into third on lap five.
That’s when the fun started as Ebert and Sabraski used the entire track to try and get by Wermter, who did a fantastic job of holding them off. Finally, with three laps left, Ebert was able to get inside position on Turn Two, and edged his way through to take the lead. There was a good deal of contact with all three cars, but all was good at the end of the race.
“It got a little wilder than most of us would like,” Ebert said. “It got a little physical. Travis, Shane and I are pretty clean drivers and don’t like slamming into each other. Sometimes it gets a little physical, but it is nice at the end when we can all shake hands and be buddies.”
Wermter, Sabraski, and Ebert have a good relationship, and that goes a long way toward taking care of any bad feelings that may occur when the race gets physical.
“With any racing situation there are always two sides to every story,” Ebert said. “You want to make sure that everybody is on the same page. No one likes rubbing and costing each other money. Both of them are really good drivers and really competitive. It’s just fun to be able to race with them.”
Ebert combined with Justin Jones to have a competitive Modified feature. Jones got the lead from Danny Vang three laps into the race. Sabraski had to exit with engine trouble after lap four. That means the bounty that was on Sabraski will stay in place, per track rules.
Ebert was running behind Jones when a caution flag came out with two laps left. On the restart, Ebert took over first place at the white flag, but Jones got it back on the back straight-away and held on for the win over Ebert.
The win was nullified for Jones in the tech shed after the race as he was ruled to have a bad shock, but it didn’t take away from the excitement of a great race.
“It was a really good race. I had a good starting position and we had a good battle,” Ebert said. “I worked my way up to the front, and I passed (Jones) on the white flag lap.
“We both got together going into Turn One and slipped. It was a good race. I was sorry about the disqualification. Justin’s a good kid and I feel bad for him, but I will take it.”
In other action, Aaron Johnson and Jess Geesey took wins in the Hornet Feature, and Mark Olson held off Mike Smude for a win in the Pure Stock feature.
Tim Johnson and Mark Johnson had another good battle in the Street Stock feature with Tim Johnson getting the win, and Shane Sabraski won the Super Stock feature.
