Sara Wennerstrand turned in a valiant effort in goal and Heather Smart netted the first goal of her varsity career, but the Brainerd/Little Falls Flying Warriors lost 2-1 to the Moorhead Spuds in a Section 8-2A game Thursday night at the Brainerd Area Civic Center.
After losing their last three games, all via shutout and by a combined score of 30-0, the Flying Warriors were looking to rebound against the Spuds who came in at 2-6-1.
After two scoreless periods, Rebekah Hakk put Moorhead on the board eight seconds into the final stanza.
Smart, a junior, tied it up at 8:34 with an assist from Tory Brown.
Monique Aanenson put in the game-winner for the Spuds at 12:39.
Wennerstrand turned aside 44 of the 46 shots she faced while the Flying Warriors managed just 12 shots on goal.
