Girls Hockey: Flying Warriors slay Bears for first win

BAUDETTE — Brooke Mimmack, Kristina Anderson and Maria Lennander contributed two goals and two assists each to lead the Brainerd/Little Falls Flying Warriors to their first win of the season, 8-3 over the winless Lake of the Woods Bears in a non-conference game Tuesday.

Karli Ring also had a four-point night with a goal and three assists. Sara Wennerstrand finished with a goal and assist. Gretchen Gramer and Heather Smart each assisted on goals.

“We came in knowing we had a legitimate chance to come out ahead,” said Brainerd/Little Falls coach Stephanie Sustercich. “The kids were excited to get out on the ice and it was fun to see them play hard. They’ve been so hungry and have been putting hard work in everyday.

“We’ve been skating only nine skaters and one goalie. We moved Sara (Wennerstrand) out (from goal) to make up the ninth skater and Fallon (Yates), our backup goalie, played her second full game.”

Yates was credited with 18 saves as the 1-6 Flying Warriors outshot the Bears 39-21.
